Last week we attended Leeds Community Homes Ltd (LCH) community share offer event, inviting investment for their next sustainable, affordable community in Armley (More info on that here: bit.ly/3t5Pe2u). The event took place at a recently completed development, Chapeltown Cohousing (ChaCo), where LEDA provided renewables strategy advice and building services design.
Visiting this amazing community was a great reminder of the huge benefits of creating housing which is embedded in its place and addresses the needs of the local and wider community.
The gardens and community spaces at ChaCo provide a vibrant heart to the scheme. The hard work and perseverance of the co-housing group to work with the design team and two different contractors shines through in the character of the place, which in spite of many challenges has been created for and by the people who live there.
We need MANY more examples of this in the UK’s poorly resourced housing provision. The new Leeds Community Homes Armley project looks set to be the next shining example.
