It is now widely acknowledged by councils and organisations that we are in a state of climate emergency and it is vital that the UK increases the rate of improvement to the energy efficiency of existing buildings, reducing the demand for space heating such that it can then be feasibly met by renewable sources.

Following the AECB conference this year, a petition has been started to ask for the same zero rate of VAT that is applied to new buildings to be applied to deep retrofit projects (defined by the AECB as a greater than 50% reduction in energy use for space heating). We believe that this is one of several measures that the government could put into place to encourage building owners to make substantial improvements to their buildings that will then be fit for the future.

Please consider signing this petition to parliament to support this proposal: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/264073
